The best wired controller for the price, until there is a wired Sega style controller.

This is the perfect controller for RetroPie, with a few caveats. If you like the SNES style of controller, I can't imagine you would dislike this one as it is faithful to that design with a few nice, modern touches and extra buttons so it can be used on many different systems. I have several 8BitDo wireless controllers and bought this one because I became aware of input lag by reading about it online. I am a long time gamer, but was oblivious to this phenomenon until I recently decided to play every version of the original Mega Man to compare and contrast how each port holds up. For those, like me, who didn't know: input lag is a very slight delay between button press and character action. It's hard to notice at first but once you do notice it, it's impossible to ignore. From what I read, input lag varies due to many different factors, but in most cases, it is recommended to have a wired controller if you want to reduce it as much as possible (for older games it is impossible to eliminate completely unless you play on original hardware, using a CRT). Needless to say, precision is preferred for any medium to fast paced action game. The wireless controllers by 8BitDo are some of the best that I own, and lag is minimal to the point that I barely noticed it, so I figured their wired controller would be even better in that regard. Although there are ways to test input lag, I haven't done so, but based on feel alone, this is the best. Jumps are crisp. It passed the Mega Man test (finishing Mega Man 1 in one sitting without once feeling cheated by the hardware). While playing Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow I was gleefully short-hopping everywhere, and it felt responsive. Build construction is also great - I don't know how this controller feels so solid for only $30, but it is the new standard for 3rd party controllers as far as I'm concerned. Perfect for early retro gaming

I bought this as controller for a Mister FPGA and it does the job pefectly. Cable means that it doesn't have any noticable input delay compared to BT controllers, no connectivity issues and no battery issues. The shape is good and comfortable, buttons feel solid. I was surprised to lean there is a vibration function, and it worked out of the box for cores that support it like N64.

Quality controller for emulators!

I've picked up a small collection of off brand and some branded China-made controllers, and wanted to try something different. I've been using a usb SNES replica controller for 8/16 bit games and the shielding on the cable is wearing in till break point. I was in need of something better with good build quality and reputable feedback without breaking the bank. I received this next day delivery, and tested it on Emuelec 4.3. It registers as an xbox 360 controller which is good because its easy to map. Not only is it good for Arcade, mame, megadrive, snes etc it's also good for PS1 emulation, source ports like PRBOOM. The vibration function does work but it isn't that strong. It's priced in a similar range to some mixed bag of controllers but this one has a premium feel. It's the same size as the orignal SNES controller. Quality cable, quality d pad, the ergonomics and comfort are the two main selling points of the controller. It handles really well for a small controller. The analogue sticks are tiny but they respond well, no drift as far as I can tell. If you love retro USB controllers, you can't go wrong with this 8bitdo model.

Good quality

If you’re after controllers that combine a retro look and feel with modern functionality and solid build quality, these are a great choice. While they are wired, which might not suit everyone, I intentionally opted for the wired version. They offer better connection stability, especially when paired with a Raspberry Pi 5, and eliminate the need for charging. Plus, the wired setup enhances the retro vibe, making the experience even more authentic.
