Great cable
In the 90s and 2000s I only used composite. Now i get to use all my retro games in S video.
Great with quirks
Worked really well and the only quirk is if you have multiple consoles connected on the same cable. Like the ps2 has to be turned off to have audio play on n64
Better picture on LCD with N64
Have tried with N64 on an older 720p LCD screen which was purchased because it has the old connections. I was playing with the composite yellow connector and can definitely tell an improvement in the picture when using the S-Video. It's not night and day, but using without an upscaler on an LCD is not the optimal setup for this comparison. Overall, I felt the picture difference was worth the money.
Artifacts, But Up To Personal Preference
Mixed-ish thoughts on these. I have a PVM-2030 and a GV-USB2 capture card. I use OEM or licensed (HORI) cables and bought these to compare (and spare some space haha). First and foremost, there IS checkerboarding. It's much more faint then other low quality cables but it is there. Granted it's also there in the HORI cables as well but to a much lesser extant. There is a chance my 5-in x 2-out S-Video switch might be exacerbating the artifacts, but it can't be by much. On a real CRT, the checkerboarding will be completely invisible. You WILL NOT be able to see it no matter how hard you try so keep that in mind. On a modern display, you will absolutely notice the checkerboarding and it'll be even more noticeable if you have a proper video scaler or have the sharpness cranked up. I would stay away from these kinds of cables if you are using any form of HDTV or monitor. Final thoughts: 1. If you play retro games on original hardware using an HDTV and DO NOT STREAM/RECORD gameplay: Do not get this cable, seek proper HDMI cables/converters/mods or use component and get a proper video scaler. If you play retro games on original hardware using a CRT and DO NOT STREAM/RECORD gameplay: Then DO get these cables, they'll save a ton of space, free up precious ports on your video switcher/TV/monitor and you will get a cable that hook up to 8 consoles (PS1/2/3, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Dreamcast, Saturn) with 0 downsides. 3. If you play retro games on original hardware using a modern HDTV and DO STREAM/RECORD gameplay: Still, do not get this cable, seek proper HDMI cables/converters/mods or use component and capture the footage accordingly. A proper video scaler is a MUST for this method. 4. If you play retro games on original hardware using a CRT and DO STREAM/RECORD gameplay (like me): Then it gets tricky. Are you willing to trade some artifacting in your capture to keep your set up organized? Are you willing to spend only $30-35 on one cable that can hook up a maximum
