Great Little Marble Run!

I had been looking at this marble run for quite a while but was hesitant about buying it after seeing a You Tube review calling it the worst marble run on Amazon. But at $29.99 with a 15% off coupon I figured what the heck & finally went for it. I'm glad I did. The kit comes with a nice sized wax crayon & glue. I’ve done a few marble runs by Wood Trick & ROKR & I found the wood quality in this kit to be just as good or better than those. I think this is why they don’t include many extra pieces. I did not break a single one. The instructions are fine as long as you pay attention to detail & look at the pictures carefully. I waxed all the gears & any wood that the gears came into contact with. When pushing wood pieces together if I felt any resistance I would stop & wax both pieces & then I was able to easily push them together until I could feel that they were inserted as far as they could go. And I only glued pieces that went in too easily & would fall out on their own. I found that when I was assembling some of the finished pieces I had to maneuver them a bit to get them in position but once I did, the tabs & slots line up perfectly. The motor & battery packs are neatly enclosed in wood & attached to the kit & the on/off switch is easily accessible. I love that it runs on batteries so I don’t have to bother with cords & plugs, & since it doesn’t need an outlet it can be placed anywhere. This marble run is small but there’s a lot packed into it! It’s a lot of fun to watch! I hope SainSmart Jr keeps them coming!

Directions are questionable but turned out well

This product is really cool. The directions are hard to follow sometimes but use your best judgment and it turns ok. The plastic pieces are difficult to connect to the wood pieces so definitely use some superglue. Overall, a fun piece to put together, probably took us around 5 hours over a few days. We appreciate that it is motor powered and not hand crank.

Frustrating and challenging, complex, nearly impossible. But very cool if you can get it to work.

I'm at a bit of a loss on how to rate this, so let's cut to the chase: Should you buy it? Probably NOT. If this is going to be your first marble run, or if you've only built very simple runs before, you'll probably get so frustrated with this you'll throw it in the trash and never buy another run, EDIT: See update at bottom of review FINAL EDIT: if you're considering purchasing this, please read the entire review before you do, so you understand the frustration you'll be in for. BUT final update: I spent several weeks gradually reengineering this run to resolve almost all the problems. There's still one issue that's inherent in the design that can't be worked around, but after adjusting, tweaking, modifying, adding parts and even removing one of the 50/50 toggles, I finally have this working almost all the time. It's really quite an interesting design, with a lot of action in a very small space. Fun to watch. I do strongly suggest two things: buy some extra 10mm steel balls and add half a dozen more. With only the balls it comes with there's too much "dead time" with nothing really happening. And get a 4 volt battery eliminator or power supply to replace the AA batteries. Make the motor run faster and smoother, which also makes it more fun to watch. If you're an experienced builder of these and willing to take on a major challenge, you might get it to work. IF, on the other hand, you've built multiple complex runs, and have a good feel for the kinds of issues that are likely to arise and are willing to figure out how to fix them, you WILL get frustrated, too. This is a clever idea, ruined by poor design and engineering. I've built four complex marble runs successfully, and I'm about ready to give up on this one. I've ended up taking half of it apart, one section at a time, to try to re-engineer it, and still can't get it to work reliably after hours of work. Non-Functioning and Fragile Pieces

I've completed several marble runs and have had minor issues with some, but this one had many issues from fragile pieces to non-working functions. The most aggravating part was the balls would not appropriately go up the circular tower without spurting out at the top or going down the middle. Based on other reviews, I could very well have met the contraption that exceeds my capabilities, but after putting together marble runs that have over 600 or 700 pieces and not having this type of trouble, I have a hard time believing it was my skills that was the problem.

Cool

Very cool. My issue is sturdiness and functionality. The motor did not work so we had to rig it ourselves. It also sits very lopsided. Other than that, still fun for the family.
