Smart glasses i hope some of that brilliance to me, lol.
You can get your prescription put in I'm waiting to get mine back. Interesting talking on the phone picked up on Bluetooth, the camera instally send video or snapshot to your phone. Amazing.
Not a gimmick, a genuinely new way to capture and interact, with a few loose ends
I had never used smart glasses before and was keen to find out whether they are a gimmick or an actually useful tool. Before even getting to the tech, one massive positive came right away. My wife complimented how they look on me and said I look like a secret agent in them. That alone set a good tone. The camera is the standout for me. The best camera is the one that is always with you, and these are always on your face. You get 100 percent candid photos and videos, no posing, no prep, no fumbling to pull out a phone. I was surprised how many moments I was able to capture that would otherwise been gone. I learned to say "Ok Meta, take a photo" as fast as drawing a gun in the Wild West and it paid off numerous times. Low light performance is decent too. One thing to keep in mind is that the camera sits off center on the frame, so make sure you account for that when framing shots. Also, I was surprised to realize how much I move my head side to side when shooting videos. It is something to consider when creating content as it may become a pain to edit afterwards. Finally, the aspect ratio of the photos and videos is odd. It's vertical but not quite as narrow as vertical phone screen so for shorts you would need to crop some from the sides. The angle of view is pretty impressive, especially vertically, it captures quite a bit on the bottom. Don't be surprised when you see your own feet in a shot. Voice control with Meta AI works a lot like ChatGPT or Claude in conversation, and the hardware and software integration is solid. You can take a photo and send it straight to a Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp contact, and you can do live video calls through the glasses as well. I tested live translation by watching news in Mandarin. It translated in real time and the result made total sense, even though it was a continuous stream of fast speech. In a normal back and forth conversation it should be even easier. You can listen to music through the somewhat bone conducting style
I didn’t think I’d love smart glasses, but I definitely see the appeal now!
My initial impression of these Ray-Ban Meta glasses is really good! The packaging is simple but nicely done. The box has a rip strip to open it, and inside is the case with the glasses and protective covers on the arms that you remove before wearing them. Everything feels well packaged without a bunch of unnecessary extras. Setup was surprisingly easy. When I first put them on, they announced the battery level, and then I connected them to my iPhone through the Meta app. I can’t speak for the Android setup, but with Apple it was extremely straightforward. The app walks you through everything step by step, including how to use the different controls, which I really appreciated. The technology is honestly pretty impressive. You can ask Meta AI questions about things you’re looking at, and it gives you information about what’s around you. The picture and video quality is also really nice! Videos are recorded as clips, but you can combine clips into a longer video, which is a neat feature. I can definitely see myself using these for vacations and everyday moments when I don’t necessarily want to pull out my phone. Another feature I really like is being able to listen to music while still hearing what’s happening around me. You aren’t completely tuned out from conversations or your surroundings. The touch controls are also very simple once you’ve gone through the setup tutorial. As far as the actual glasses, they feel sturdy and well made. Several people have commented that they wouldn’t even realize these were AI glasses because the technology is incorporated so nicely into the design. They really do look and feel like a quality pair of Ray-Bans. My biggest hesitation is honestly just the cat-eye shape. I’m still not completely sure how I feel about that particular style on my face, but that’s obviously personal preference and not a reflection of the glasses themselves. I got these Meta Ray Ban glasses for my wife. I have been using the Gen 1 Wayfarer for a while, and she wanted a pair that looked a little more feminine. The Zena model has a really nice and classy design that suits her style much better. One of the main reasons she wanted Meta glasses was to take POV pictures and videos of our activities, our dogs, or when we are doing sports. The overall camera quality is very good, and it feels like a big upgrade compared to my old Gen 1 glasses. She also enjoys listening to music with them. It is much more convenient than having to wear a separate pair of AirPods, and the sound quality is surprisingly good. The sound is clear, and the bass is decent, making them enjoyable for listening to music throughout the day. The Meta AI feature is a bit hit or miss. Sometimes, the answers to our questions are helpful, but other times, the responses feel generic and do not really add much beyond what we can already see. So far, I have found it most useful for identifying plants and trees. It did a pretty good job when I asked it about those. Battery life is another welcome improvement. I was able to wear the glasses for a full day, take a few pictures, and listen to some music throughout the day, and I still had more than 20% battery remaining. That is pretty impressive for this type of device. I think Meta Ray Ban glasses are among the best smart glasses available right now, and for good reason. The camera quality, convenience, sound, and battery life make them very practical for everyday use.
Fun product but with some shortcomings
This is my first experience with smart glasses, and I was curious to see whether they were actually useful or just another gimmick. Overall, I'm impressed with some of the features, although there are a few frustrating shortcomings. First, the Zena design feels more feminine than unisex, and personally, I'm not a big fan of the styling. I wish I had gone with a more neutral design. Setup was fairly straightforward on my iPhone. Although the packaging emphasizes iPhone compatibility, the app also supports Android, but I haven't tested it on an Android device. The voice assistant activates with "Hey Meta" and generally works well. However, I did encounter a few issues when making calls and had to restart the glasses several times to get everything working properly. The camera is easily my favorite feature. Being able to capture POV photos and videos without pulling out my phone is incredibly convenient, and the image quality is surprisingly good, even in lower lighting. I've captured quite a few spontaneous moments that I would have otherwise missed. The vertical aspect ratio is a little unusual, though, and videos may need cropping for social media shorts. The Meta AI integration is also impressive. I like being able to take photos, share them through WhatsApp or Messenger, and even make video calls directly through the glasses. The open-ear speakers are another nice feature for listening to music without wearing separate earbuds. My biggest disappointment is the battery life. Despite the advertised battery life of up to nine hours, I barely managed three hours during a road trip, with only a few minutes of video recording and some photos. The voice assistant also doesn't work without a network connection, and at one point, the glasses refused to take photos because they were supposedly too cold, even though the temperature was positive.
