An Advanced Cinematic Upgrade For Compact Spaces!
Update: I mentioned below that after connecting the sound bar via HDMI to my ARC port on my TV, the app was showing that the signal passed to bar from the TV was 2.0 Channel 48K. However, after tinkering with the TV settings a bit, I found the Audio settings and changed the Audio out setting to Passthrough, and now I'm getting the 5.1 Channel. I didnt need a new TV with an eARC HDMI port. This is the limit of the ARC port, the 5.1 channel. If you need to show the 7.1 channel, then you need to connect the source, like a PS5, to the sound bar directly as I noted in my review below. In any case, most streamers like Netflix and Prime Video will output audio at 5.1 channels max due to compression, so you wont be missing much. You can also receive Dolby Atmos audio on ARC as well. Original: I have always been a massive Sony fan. Years back, I owned a surround system from them that was easily the best of its generation at the time. This new nine-speaker system is a masterpiece of technology, though achieving the proper experience requires paying close attention to your setup and your media. It works perfectly for my needs because my space is limited, which is exactly why this standalone design exists. If you want the absolute best theater experience, you need an added subwoofer and two rear speakers. However, for a compact room where extra hardware is not possible, this single unit is a fantastic choice that throws audio beautifully around you. To get the most out of it, you need to ensure you are playing media that supports advanced formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS. Streaming a standard stereo channel won't produce the 360 Spatial Sound Mapping results you are after. For installation, the most convenient method for me was connecting the included HDMI cable from the TV ARC port straight to the soundbar HDMI out port. With the arrival of the era of powerful TV soundbars, there is lots to choose from in this higher end grouping. The Sony Bravia Theater Bar 7 is next to the top unit available from Sony designed to reproduce the immersive surround sound environment from a single place at your TV. Nine speakers are positioned so as to mimic the output of a 7.1 channel input and output it to the speakers. Setting up the unit is simple. It comes with brackets that allow wall mounting if your TV is higher up in the wall. Once powered on, you download the Sony Bravia Connect app - I used the Apple iphone version. Using the directions in the software, you create an account, then connect to the unit via Bluetooth. It immediately asked to download the latest firmware which took about 15 minutes to install. Once completed, you connect your TV to the eARC HDMI connection - thoughtfully located on an angled, recessed plug-in board to allow positioning as close to the wall as possible. There is a separate HDMI connection - normally intended for direct connection to a gaming console like a PS5. Passthrough HDMI is available allowing you to send signals to an outboard AV receiver for example. The passthrough output supports formats up to 8K/60 fps video - 4K at 120 fps. Once connected, follow the instructions in the app to run the optimization program. This runs a series of sounds that "listen" to your room and apply EQ and volume corrections to the system to allow it to best integrate with your room. Best results are obtained if you can reduce reflections from smooth walls and floors with carpeting and drapes or wall sound treatment. Once that's done, you can enjoy immersive Dolby Atmos, Dolby, DTS and PCM audio up to 7.1 channels and 192KHz/24 bit sound. The experience is excellent compared to standard stereo TV speakers. Outstanding Sony Soundbar with Powerful Cinematic Audio, Premium Features, and Easy Setup
I installed the Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 7 in my bedroom, and I couldn't be happier with it. As expected from Sony, the build quality is outstanding. The soundbar feels solid, well made, and has a clean, modern design that looks great under the TV. Setup was quick and straightforward, and I had everything connected and working in just a short time. The sound quality is exceptional. The first movie I watched immediately showed what this soundbar is capable of. Dialogue is crisp and easy to understand, while music, background effects, and action scenes have incredible clarity and depth. It completely transformed the viewing experience, making movies feel much more immersive. It honestly feels like my bedroom has its own mini theater now. The Dolby Atmos, DTS, and 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology create a surprisingly large soundstage for a single soundbar. The audio extends well beyond the television, giving movies and TV shows another dimension. Surround effects are convincing, and the upward-firing and side-firing speakers do an excellent job filling the room with sound. I also appreciate the automatic Sound Field Optimization, which tailors the audio to the room. Once it was calibrated, everything sounded balanced and natural without requiring any manual adjustments. Voices remain clear even during loud action scenes, thanks to the dedicated center speaker, which is something I really notice when watching movies late at night. The wireless features are another big plus. Bluetooth pairing is quick and reliable, and it's convenient to stream music from my phone. Support for Spotify Connect and AirPlay 2 gives plenty of options for listening to music, podcasts, or other audio without having to turn on additional equipment.
