good product
solid piece of fanless hardware, easy to work with. Ubuntu 24.04 installed like a breeze. I'm using it for a mini home server - bought a 4TB m.2 SSD for it (the largest I could find in a 2242). Really cool to have something this small you could mount anywhere or put on a shelf and have a solid machine with that much storage. You could easily use it as a firewall too since it has two 2.5Gbit interfaces. I haven't tried opnsense on it, but my guess is, it could be a good box for that too.
Additional kernel parameter required for Linux to prevent random crash
I bought this tiny box for Linux home server. Installation went frawlessly but experienced random crash(kernel panic) while machine is idle. Found that the crash is Intel N100 powersaving related problem and here is a workaround. Just pass additional kernel param "intel_idle.max_cstate=1" and crash goes away. On most Linux system, you have to append this to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT on /etc/default/grub. Then run "sudo update-grub" and reboot. This disables deep sleep of N100, so makes ZBOX a little bit warmer, but runs just fine.
No 2280 drive or HDCP support. Random stability issues.
First the issues. Uses shorter 2242 size NVME drive, does not support HDCP so no Netflix HDR, and random performance issues. What I mean by the last issue is that it would occasionally but frequently stutter while watching videos via KODi, and hosted websites would not allow connection randomly, etc. Things I liked are heat management, optional SATA hard drive option and documentation. I tried to like it but given the issues, cost of DDR5, lack of shorter NVME drive, and performance issues made me return it.
DOA - Would not boot... at all.
Normally I rate Zbox 5 stars. This one is No boot, no beeps just power and that is it. WAS going to get another since we all know bad units do make it out of testing, But I have 7 other Zbox C series that have been in service a long time. After seeing others having DOA issues I decided to just return it. Little voice in my head. I listen to the voice in my head. When I used to build PC's professionally there was a company that supplied most of the city. THEY had a nasty habit of taking in returns and putting them right back out for 3 times! They used us builders to sort thier garbage from user errors. And THAT is what my little voice is whispering. COULD be unfounded,but... Don't get me wrong, I LOVE ZBOX's. AS I said I have 7.
