A little spendy but a real nice router

I have several TP-Link products and they all seem well built and well thought out. I like the admin interface. Lots of information and all of the configuration settings are cleanly laid out and easy to access. One thing that I was pleasently surprised by is that you can combine its 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Wifi to use the same SSID. That is slick. Setup was very easy and it immediately reccognized my ISPs gateway and configured itself to communicate with it. Updates can be set to automatic and there is a built-in security scanner for a little piece of mind. I think it's fantastic and I highly recommend it if you have a moderately complex network.

A miss for those wanting complete control of their system

The router is fast and reasonably easy to configure. Good speed and signal. The downfall is that to get many of the basic functions they hold you hostage to buying a subscription to their HomeShield app. Why should you have to pay for basic information like total bandwidth usage. Information that most other router manufacturers provide as part of the the basic interface. And the Parental controls are crazy to use. They must be created per device and there is no copy and paste if applying the same restrictions to multiple devices. Why not have the simple system of creating a profile that you can assign as many devices to as you wish. Additionally the system report claims a network weakness in the Guest Network, no password assigned. Well there is one assigned. No idea what is up with that. Plus the USB drive access only has two logins. Admin and visitor, no option to create multiple logins to allow restrictions to be applied on a per user basis. Seems like a good router but it sure has a LOT of user, interface misses

Fast, fancy, and almost the network brain I wanted

I tried this because, on paper, it looks like exactly the kind of router I should want: Wi-Fi 7, tri-band wireless, 6 GHz, two 10G ports, VPN client/server features, USB 3.0, EasyMesh, HomeShield, and a dedicated IoT network. That is a lot of impressive networking alphabet soup in one dramatic black box. And to be fair, a lot of it works really well. Setup was straightforward, the interface was easy enough to navigate, and the wireless performance was strong. As a high-end consumer/prosumer Wi-Fi appliance, this thing is genuinely good. If your goal is “I want fast Wi-Fi, fewer dead spots, and my devices to stop acting cursed,” this router will probably make you happy. Where it worked for me was as a powerful all-in-one home router. It has tons of headroom, modern Wi-Fi, simple management, and enough features that most normal households will never get close to stressing it. For phones, laptops, TVs, consoles, and basic smart-home devices, it is a beast. Where it did not work for me is as the center of my actual network, because my setup is more complicated than a normal home network. I run Home Assistant, smart-home devices, cameras, servers, NAS/storage, and homelab equipment, and I care a lot about what talks to what. I do not just want a separate IoT network called something tidy and reassuring. I want to be able to say: these light bulbs may talk to Home Assistant, but they may not talk to my laptops, my NAS, my cameras, or the rest of the house like they own the place. That is where this starts to hit its limits. “Private IoT Network” is useful, but it is not the same thing as a real VLAN/firewall setup. It is convenient separation, not full network policy control. For a serious Home Assistant or homelab setup, I want proper VLANs, managed switching, firewall rules, camera isolation, server isolation, mDNS/Bonjour control, and very specific policies about which devices are allowed to communicate.
