bad modem stay away
not as per advertised speed. needs rebooting. connection keeps dropped on Lan and wifi. just bad modem all around, for this price but the ax1500. keep away from this.

Great affordable little router for setting up OpenWRT
My ITS/CIS Son wanted to set up OpenWRT for his VPN service, and this router was most cost effective option available for him to experiment on. He found only one major issue, you'll need to use a slightly older version browser to do the initial memory reflash, but once that first step was out of the way, the process can be done on any browser, and was easy to do. He recommends this router as a great starting point for someone wanting to use a VPN for their home network, not just per computer. He found the information, appropriate firmware and instructions for redoing the router at openwrt.org. Migration to using it as a VPN router was a relatively simple, step by step process, and well documented on the OpenWRT website. Setting up the VPN side was covered on the VPN provider's websites, so for whicher brand/service you choose you can find what you need to make it work smoothly on an enabled router. For roughly $30, it was a great buy, and wasn't a huge risk if somehow the router gets bricked. I think the lower price is because D-Link ceased DIR-2640 production a while ago, and product support of this model ended in June, but that doesn't mean the router is dead to the world; to the contrary, he'll probably get several years of good use out of it before it is ready for our local electronics recycling center. :-)
Works as advertised
Super easy to set up, works perfectly. I do wish that they had included the step in the instructions to shut off the cable modem first, then connect the router, then bring everything back up in order. I don't know how they expect people to just know that.
Finicky Finding the Right Spot for Good Coverage, but...
After MUCH research, I finally chose this and the AC3000 as replacements for my aging 10/100 routers. I hooked this up as a wired wireless access point (it's connected via LAN to the AC3000 90 feet away so that I can use WiFi in a different building) and haven't had any issues since. Well, almost no issues. It took me a week of trial and error to find the right orientation and placement so that I could get decent signal strength and wireless speed on my various devices throughout the house. But since finding that sweet spot... No issues. The main reason I chose these two routers is that they both support OpenWRT. I haven't tried that yet, but it's well documented as working on these models, so...
for small rooms, it's all that is need and very strong wifi signal for me
I am using it for security suveillance cameras and NVR plus wifi mesh with another repeater TP-link, Google chromecast to tvset; by its powerful processing power connects nearly instantaneus a wifi appliance for example android phone. My PPPoE connection has no disconnections at all none whatsoever, altough my old router was disconecting me from the broadband because the wifi webcam administring phone was umpleasant for the windows 10 firewall of the PC forcying me to use the phone on the 5G/LTE internet at home in the wifi range domain only to keep the surveillance camera connected by wifi on the internet in order to run it well which was very annoying - but with this router no problem. Another plus is how all the equipment is functioning off the bat at the moment of finishing the phisicaly wiring of all devices in a cabinet, at the elecrical power switch powering on : instantly the net is everywhere no overridings at all at the booting up in function including wifi + UTP local network, everything that is been phisicaly powered off from the grid one hour before, cables removed from their sockets for the rewiring through the cabinet holes. Deficits I didn't met no one ever.
Not happy with D-Link DIR 2640 us. (replacement review)
Router drops connection between devices like iPhone, ROKU, Epson printer, iMac. Spent far to many hours with difficult to understand D-Link techs. They had me turn off "Smart Connect" feature that switches between 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz. I must now manually choose 2.4 ghz on my iPhone XR, iPad 7th generation, etc to print on my Epson printer. After a few days my devices once again, cannot find the Epson printer, must again reselect 2.4 ghz to print. This WIFI is a real pain. Nothing comes easy with this D-Link WiFi. Having disconnect problems again with replacement DIR-2640 us. Phone tech support very hard to reach! Been trying to reach them for 4 hours today and a recording tells me to call back later. The DIR 2640 us wifi router has problems resulting for the "Smart Connect" feature. My Epson printer needs 2.4 ghz. and there is no way for me to select that here at my end without tech support instructing be how to do this. The "Smart Connect" feature is not smart enough to connect reliably with this printer with my Apple devices nor Roku. It will however stay connected with my Windows 10 laptop. I will be sending this DIR-2640 us back and this time will not order another wifi until I find a company with better customer service and support.
