A Surprising Heavy-Hitter That Transcends Its Mobile Roots
I’ve been rolling dice and pushing cardboard for over 35 years, and I even ran a brick-and-mortar game shop for a decade. So when I saw a big mobile gaming IP slapped onto a board game box, my first reaction was the usual veteran skepticism: “Here we go… another shallow cash-grab.” I was wrong. Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid (Core Edition), designed by Eric M. Lang and Ken Gruhl and published by Maestro Media, is the real deal. It’s a legit, deeply engaging design that actually respects the tabletop medium. Overview & Mechanical Identity At its heart, The Epic Raid sits in that sweet spot between accessible gateway-plus and multi-layered tactical play. It’s for 2–4 players and runs about 60–90 minutes. You get the full asymmetrical loop: base-building, resource management (Elixir, Gold, and Dark Elixir), designing your defense grid, and then launching grid-based raids. This isn’t a luck-fest. Lang and Gruhl lean hard into clever action selection and resource engines. On your turn you’re expanding your village, placing defensive turrets, and carefully drafting the right troops for a raid. Once the raid starts, the tactical movement feels great—you’re constantly thinking about line-of-sight, when to breach walls, what to prioritize, and when to drop your hero. The Pros Pedigree and polish. Having Eric M. Lang (Blood Rage, Rising Sun) and Ken Gruhl on design duty shows. The action economy is tight, and the risk/reward on raids feels carefully tuned instead of random. Satisfying base-building. Laying out your village board isn’t just for looks. Where you put walls, cannons, and mortars actually changes how hard (or easy) it is for someone to raid you. It’s a nice mix of spatial puzzle and direct interaction. Faithful adaptation. If you’ve played the digital game, the troop behaviors translate cleanly—Archers shooting over walls, Giants going after defenses, Wall Breakers opening paths. It just works on the table. Dynamic escalation. Early turns are quick expansion. By ro

Overall awesome game!
Overall, I want to say my wife and I are not huge Clash of Clans fans, but we still loved this board game. It looks a little complicated at first, and there's tons of parts and cardboard punch-outs, but they do a good job of organizing different aspects of the game to be easily identifiable once you understand the different parts of the game. We played a couple times and had a really awesome time each game. It took us over an hour both times, but part of that time was spent learning the rules and asking AI for clarifications at times. I bet once you learn the rules and are less distractible than us, you could play it much faster. It overall is an engine building game where you use builders to decide what you want to do each round. You can build buildings, units, upgrade your town hall, build defenses, or raid other players. But if you choose to do one of these actions, it may lock out other players from doing it as well that round. It seemed to us like there's enough valid variety of strategies, which we love. There were also other good mechanics like discounting tiles that stay out an entire round to prevent a high cost building from just sitting there too long. One complaint we had is that sometimes the rules didn't seem super clear, such as do attacking units have to attack the same tile or can they split up? (It seems they're allowed to attack simultaneously on the same tile or split up). We watched a youtube video to help explain some parts, but even the comments in that video seemed to dispute how the youtuber was playing. But with all board games, we tried to find the best rule set that was most fun for us. I also read some criticism that in the core version, they didn't include all of pieces as 3D models and some are just cardboard cutouts. I agree that the 3D models look way cooler. But it didn't seem to bother us that much. Overall the parts feel well made. The trays seem to fit well in the box, but I wasn't exactly sure how they expected you to organize i

Don't hesitate to get this if a fan of CoC; for the rest, still fun but maybe wait for a sale
I saw this board game and initially brushed it off until I saw it was made by Asmodee, who are one of the more (most?) reputable big box publishers of board games, and figured it would be worth at least one play-through (even if replayability may not be guaranteed). The game is surprisingly fun - it's basically a "raiding" game where you try and attack other camps using dice rolls; but there's a lot of emphasis on the "base building" part to close the loop on the CoC theming. Which - the theme is on point. There's a lot of familiar bits and pieces for those who play the mobile game - the characters, base building, base raiding, etc. but it's unique enough of an experience to not feel overly derivative or copied. Quality/value is a bit more open-ended. Asmodee isn't as bad as FFG in terms of pieces bloat, but there are a lot of small bits and pieces to this game seemingly rivaling them.. The figures are not the highest quality, but they look good and could totally just be a cardboard cutout for the price. Otherwise the artwork and finish and packaging, etc. are all fine. And on the price - it's not the most expensive board game ever, but it's also far from accessible.. I'd say that the "sweet spot" for casual games is $20-$40 (depending on the size and scale of the game). This definitely trends much closer to enthusiast games, which can be expected to run $80-$100. That said, those games should have that much more replayability to make up for it... In that context, I think the "worth" of this game will hinge almost entirely on how much your group is willing to play this game again. Overall, this is a fun game with moderate replayability, increased with the expansions that I see linked (though haven't dug into). Worth picking the standalone on sale!

Solid Game, Terrible Instructions.
The game itself is solid and does a good job of bringing the base-building and raiding elements of Clash of Clans to the tabletop. There are some fun strategic decisions, the theme comes through well, and the components are nicely done. Unfortunately, the instructions are poorly organized and leave too many rules unclear, making the game much harder to learn than it should be. Once you work through the confusion, there is a good game here, but the rulebook badly needs to be rewritten.

Detailed Strategy Game
This is a very intricate board game with many pieces and a substantial set of instructions. I purchased it for my nephew, who is a big Clash of Clans fan. We initially had to help him work through the directions because there is a lot to learn, but the game made more sense to him than it did to me because he was already familiar with the mobile game. This is best suited for children and adults who enjoy strategy games that require some thought and hands-on involvement. Someone who already enjoys games such as Monopoly or Battleship may appreciate this style of play, although this game has its own more detailed rules and mechanics. It accommodates two to four players and can take approximately one to one and a half hours, depending on the players. This is not a quick game to pull out for a few minutes; everyone should expect to read the instructions and spend some time learning it. The components are detailed and well made, and my nephew seems to enjoy playing it and sharing it with his friends. I especially recommend it for existing Clash of Clans fans who will recognize the concepts and enjoy seeing the mobile game adapted for the tabletop.
