A timely read!
The best book to know the inside working of AI industries
Excellent read!!
As someone that’s read a lot of books on ai, there’s nothing out there at this level of journalism except Karen Hao. It’s a deep dive on the founding of ChatGPT/openai with all the drama! But Karen also gets into topics like ai safety, power and control. Highly recommend!
Beautifully written, meticulously researched and documented, and incisively critiqued
The writing of the young author is not simply beautiful but mature, and accomplished. The book concerns OpenAI, its evolution, its personalities with particular emphasis on the CEO, Sam Altman; its association with Microsoft due to the accelerating costs as a result of the massiveness of the raw data processed, and scaling, and the consequent enormity of compute power required; its association with Microsoft changed its status from non-for-profit to for profit; the colonial exploitation of Kenyan workers employed for reinforcement learning from human feedback which is necessary for reasons of alighnment that is making sure an arificial intelligence system's goals, actions, and behavior match human values, safety, rules, and actual intentions; and the enormous amounts of energy and often drinking water used in data centers, and their huge environmental impact. I shall conclude the review with the description of the unflattering personality of Sam Altman, quoting from the book: ''He is at once generous and self-serving, agreeable and threatening, a benefactor for so many people and the source of great personal pain for others. Someone who projects sincerity and altruism in public but reveals a more complicated calculus through his behaviors behind closed doors. Someone who can give and take away, leaving many with an impression that they are part of a larger game of chess for which only he can see the full board, and the end game is to preserve his power as king.''
Great book, eye opening content.
I’ve really enjoyed reading this book, it gives a lot of perspective and shares a lot of findings all in 1 book. It does have a few mistakes here and there but that doesn’t bother me much, it’s the content that matters. If you’re looking for a good book on how the power fight for AI has been unfolding between different people, what employees have faced, this is a good one. You don’t need be a technical person to read this book.
