A huge upgrade from my hammered-flat copper pipe hack
Full disclosure: I did not buy these for a golf cart. I only wish I owned a golf cart—not for golfing, but for zooming around. I bought this cable kit to interconnect three 12-volt deep-cycle batteries in my RV, and it is absolutely perfect for that job. The cables feel extremely well made. The 4-AWG wire is heavy enough for my application but still flexible, and the crimped ring terminals look solid. On a couple of connections, I needed to rotate an end about a quarter turn to line it up with the battery post. The cable accommodated that without appearing to put any strain on the wire or terminal. You would laugh at what these replaced. I had taken unused copper plumbing pipe, hammered it flat, and drilled holes in it to make battery straps. It technically worked, but it was rigid, unforgiving, and miserable to remove whenever the batteries shifted slightly. The last time I disconnected one of those homemade straps, I accidentally grounded my wrench against something it should not have touched. It took a nice little bite out of the wrench's finish and scared the crap out of me. Proper flexible cables suddenly seemed like a very good investment. The kit includes several lengths rather than seven identical cables. Four appear to be the same shorter length, one is somewhat longer, and two are noticeably longer. I did not need the odd length for my particular layout, but the assortment gave me enough flexibility to connect the three batteries neatly. The photo shows how the cables fit in my actual RV battery bank. One important warning for anyone repurposing a golf-cart cable kit: do not assume the red and black terminal coverings tell you how your RV battery bank should be connected. My three 12-volt batteries must remain a 12-volt bank in parallel. Connecting them in series would produce 36 volts, which would be a very bad surprise for my RV. Excellent Quality Cables and Perfect for My Custom Ground Strap Setup
These Nilight 4 AWG cables are technically designed as a golf cart battery cable kit, but I purchased them for a completely different application. I am using them as upgraded ground straps on my 2004 Acura TL, and they have worked extremely well. The quality of these cables immediately impressed me. The 4 AWG pure copper conductors are substantial, the insulation feels durable, and the tinned copper lugs are securely attached. The crimps look clean and strong, which is particularly important when you are using cables for high current electrical connections. For my application, the different cable lengths gave me several options for improving the grounding between the battery, chassis, engine, and other grounding points. They are considerably more substantial than the small ground straps you sometimes find in universal automotive kits. After installing them, everything is secure and working exactly as intended. Good grounds are one of those things nobody thinks about until they are bad, and then suddenly you are chasing electrical problems around the vehicle wondering which circuit has developed a mind of its own. I also like the tinned terminals because corrosion resistance matters in an engine compartment where the connections are exposed to moisture, heat, and temperature changes.
