Perfect for Trying Something You've Never Done Before

I think this is a perfect little watercolor activity for those who have never used watercolor in their whole life and are not sure they will want to continue to use it if they are not any good with a paintbrush (people like me). I'm sure the paint and paper quality are not the best, but who am I to judge since I have exactly zero experience. I have enjoyed this little set since buying it for a birthday gift for myself to try something new this year. Everything works well and I've had such a fun time exploring a side of me I didn't know I had. Highly recommend! When the paints are used up, you can go and buy your own and replace them in the neat little container.

Cute Painting Set

This arrived quickly. It is a gift so can't really comment on the quality, etc., as it was well packaged and didn't want to open it. It is certainly small and compact. It will be very useful for taking out and about on hikes. Tempted to get one for myself!

Pack is nice and fun, but the watercolors are cheap, and half the paper is black

The overall presentation and utility of this little travel set is nice, it comes in a giftable box, with a compact format that fits the watercolor palette, the paper, and the included water brush. The brush is one of the better ones I've tried, it doesn't constantly leak too much water that you need to dry it every two seconds, and has a nice fine point, ideal for small paintings. The paper itself seems fine, though not high grade. I would have preferred having just white paper, but instead it has both white and black pages. Problem with that is that the included watercolors are far from opaque enough in general to be seen on black. Some do show up, but I really don't see watercolors as a medium for black paper due to their transparency. That leads me to the last problem, the palette itself. The watercolors are definitely chalky, so much so that when I went to test adding salt to it, it smeared all over the page when I tried dusting the salt off once it was dry. There's no pigment information either, so it's a mystery what is in the paints, but given that some show up on the black paper I can say they're not very high quality and are all mixes. They also don't mix great when it comes to blooms and dropping colors into a wet area. It all just looks very muddy.

Nice portable kit

The portable watercolour paint set comes nicely packaged in a box. There’s a faux leather case that is a mini 5 ring binder. It has an elastic band to hold it closed. Inside, the elastic band holds the water brush in place. Beside it, the rings hold the palette and paper. The notebook includes 7 sheets of thick black paper that’s smooth on both sides. The 8 sheets of white paper have a rougher texture on one side with a smoother back side. The palette is plastic and hinges open from the side with the holes. The palette has 18 pans of regular colours and 6 metallic colours. The other side has 2 large depressions for water and mixing colours. The entire thing measures 130mm high x 92 wide, with a depth of 125. That’s small enough to easily fit in a pocket. The included papers are very small as a result at 105x68mm, including the area with the holes. Avoid the holes and your working space is 57mm wide. This is great if you’re doing small scale images. If you want to do something larger you’ll need a separate watercolour pad. I did a swatch test on one of the included papers as it was hard to see what colours some of the darker ones were. The set contains 8 slightly different light browns for some reason, as well as 2 blues and 2 greens. I’m surprised there’s no white to mix lighter colours as many of the colours are darker. The metallics look amazing on white and black paper. Their shine really comes through, even when mixed with other non-metallic colours. The paper was nice to work on. It took a while for the paint to dry as I made it pretty wet, but I’m happy with how everything works. I did find having a small cup of water and piece of paper towel necessary additions, though in the field I could probably do without the extra water if necessary. Lack of white aside, it’s a nice little portable paint kit.
